For the past couple of years I’ve been a hater on Tim Duncan’s style. Heck, I’ve been outright offended at times during last years’ NBA finals that Tim Duncan – NBA veteran and future hall of famer – wouldn’t at least have the decency to pull his pants up during a press conference. I mean here we are at a time where LeBron James is being featured on Vanity Fair’s best dressed list, Dwyane Wade is making more fashion headlines than he is on ESPN, and Tim’s wardrobe was looking like the clearance rack at Goodwill. And not the cool, vintage rack at that.
Well, I’m here to set the record straight and say I was wrong. After years of hating, and getting mad at Tim for not caring about his appearance, it has come to my attention that he does in fact care, and he may – dare I say it – be more fashion-forward than Russell Westbrook. Tim Duncan is Normcore.
So what exactly is Normcore? According to Vox.com, “The trend has many different looks, but it hinges on one premise: the wearer opts for clothes meant to be average. Wearers leave Chanel sneakers in the closet in favor of off-brand Keds; colorful shorts are traded for khaki cargo pants, and designer purses for backpacks. Normcore is the antithesis of the highly stylized, dark-denim, vintage-tee hipster look.”
In a nutshell, being hipster is so obvious and easy these days, that now being non-descript and looking extremely plain and casual is in. Is it the end of the world? Could be.
They even provide some pop-culture references so you can understand. Some celebrities are known for being Normcore, and most presidents are Normcore too:
The best part about this epiphany is Tim’s name. “Tim Duncan” is the most Normcore name ever. If you go down the list of all the best dressed athletes in the world: Beckham, Ama’re, Tyson, Russell, Henrik, Dwyane, LeBron, Cristiano…not one Normcore first or last name in there. It should come to no surprise to us that the most Normcore athlete out there is “Tim Duncan.”
So I’ll leave with that, and formally say I’m sorry Timmy. You had me, and the rest of the world fooled. Who would of ever thought that being normal would be in? (Let’s see how long this lasts…).
