Just after midnight on August 25th, Tommy Hilfiger announced a global brand ambassadorship with international tennis sensation Rafael Nadal for a line of modern, athletic-based undergarment designs and a variety of promotional materials featuring the Grand Slam regular.
To embrace the sleek sexiness of the products and to kick start the partnership, Hilfiger hosted a pop-up tennis tournament in NYC’s Bryant Park that same day, featuring Nadal facing off against some of the world’s best dressed models, fully decked out in current Hilfiger threads. The twist, though, was that they were playing a form of strip-tennis, with each point lost costing an item of Hilfiger clothing to the player, eventually resulting in the contestants wearing nothing but the hot new underwear fashions, a surprising and scintillating reveal that serves to capture the essence and look of this campaign.
Models present and playing included: Chanel Iman, Hannah Davis, Noah Mills, Akin Akman, Arthur Kullov, and Constance Jablonski. Special hosts for the event were television’s Jane Lynch (Glee) and actor/director Lake Bell (First Day of Camp).
Tommy Hilfiger seems as excited about the new line of apparel as they are about working with champion Nadal, who seamlessly channels the spirit of the modern man. In fact, he emerged victorious in the fast-paced tourney after 3 simple matches. However, the real winner appears to be Hilfiger, which hopes to brand itself based on Nadal’s masculine, confident persona, and celebrities, bloggers, and the fashion world are eagerly taking notice. Further promotions for the event were held through Periscope and others will include an upcoming Funny or Die campaign featuring funnyman Nate Dern and publications recorded in Nadal’s Spanish hometown of Mallorca.
